Don’t judge John Mayer by his white supremacist dick

Lot of sound and fury over the recent John Mayer interview in the March edition of Playboy magazine. Folks saying this “raw” no-holds barred discussion with the talented and popular guitarist/singer/songwriter now solidly confirms that the boy is without question a “douchebag” (I guess I spelled that right. Not exactly a word I use a lot) and, quite  possibly, a racist who has the audacity to label his penis as Nazi-influenced organ with a mind of its own that has exhibited white supremacist tendencies. Or something along those lines. I guess the real question was whether Mayer was open to having sex with black women and he indicated that he wasn’t really comfortable with that or whatever/

Personally? I don’t get what all the fuss is about.

Well. Then again, maybe I do. Why? Because my guess is that a good 90 percent of the folks getting all bent out of shape after having supposed learned that Mayer is a closet Nazi have not actually read the actual interview. Because, well, why waste time reading something longer than a Tweet and then (God forbid( take even MORE time making up your own mind when you can just set aside a few hot seconds to read a hot-button phrase or two? Why waste time being informed when it’s so much easier to become inflamed?

All of which is to say that if I had decided to make up my mind based on the “my dick is a white supremacist” comment then, well, yeah. I’d have a bit of a problem with Mayer. Or at least I’d have problems with his dick which, like the dicks of most men, has a mind of its own.

But then, for some strange and unknowable reason I decided to read the entire interview. Which brings me back kind of to where I started which is that I just don’t get what all the fuss is all about. Did Mayer say some stupid shit? Yes. Absolutely. Some poor word choices? Again, I’d have to say yes. But if anyone reads this entire interview and still comes away with the opinion that this man is a racist who despises black women then, well, I guess I just don’t get you. Because if you read what else he says about his opinions concerning black people in that same article? Yeah, well.

And, I mean, speaking honestly here; if the man is not comfortable sleeping with black women is that really a crime worthy of the death penalty? And do black women really give a damn that John Mayer doesn’t want to screw a sister. Do black men? Do white people care about this? Does anybody really give a fuck? It’s not like Mayer called black women any type of derogatory term, or insinuated something horrible about the way they perform in bed (as if he’d know).

But I’m not gonna tell you any more of what he did or didn’t say because if you already read it for yourself then you know. And if you didn’t, but still consider yourself having a worthwhile opinion on the matter, well, you don’t. And you should read the piece.

In conclusion? A man should never be judged by the wayward tendencies of his johnson. Because if that were the standard for all men…?

Yeah. Think about that for a minute.

  1. I must admit that I’ve missed the entire Mayer controversy as I’ve been dealing with family matters over the past week or so. I appreciate your commentary. I guess I need to read the article and make up my own mind as well…

    peace, Villager

  2. I’ve not read the interview but I think I have a worthwhile opinion on the matter. I agree with you. Mayer used poor judgement in his word choices.

All the uproar shows how quickly folks jump to conclusions and how contentious this has become. Sadly, since Obama’s election I think we’ve seen more devisiveness on this. I hate to think we’ve taken a step backward, but so many people are using race as an easy means to discredit political opinion rather than really address the political issues and positions. As a result, real racism is harder to see.

Thanks for calling this one like it is and not letting this become more fuel for the fire.

  3. I didn’t read the entire article – just a couple Tweets – but I’m not mad at John Mayer. There are plenty of Black men with “David Duke d*cks” out there, too – and they’ve actually made derogatory comments about Black women to prove it…
