As Obama welcomes youngsters back to school, fear of a black president takes hold

I really did think it was going to take a little longer than this for the racism to get this ugly. Don’t exactly know why I chose to believe that, especially given how long I’ve been an American citizen, but I guess I just thought maybe somehow a miracle could occur and we would be able to last at least the first year without any major red flag incidents. I mean sure, of course I knew there were going to be your standard displays of racism. I knew Rush Limbaugh was going to be more ignorant than his contract required, and FOX News was naturally going to kick their shtick into overdrive because that’s how they get paid.

But now we have entire school districts threatening not to broadcast President Obama’s back to school address today because the parents in these school districts are reportedly terrified that the president may somehow use his Power of Office to indoctrinate little Johnny and Sally into becoming members of a young Socialist movement at worst, or left wing liberals at best. But whatever subversive message the Evil Prez has planned for the young’uns, these highly alert parents are making sure that their brood will be protected from this danger.

Just how dangerous is this message, you ask? How real is this threat? Well let’s listen in…

Hello everyone – how’s everybody doing today? I’m here with students at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia. And we’ve got students tuning in from all across America, kindergarten through twelfth grade. I’m glad you all could join us today.

I know that for many of you, today is the first day of school. And for those of you in kindergarten, or starting middle or high school, it’s your first day in a new school, so it’s understandable if you’re a little nervous. I imagine there are some seniors out there who are feeling pretty good right now, with just one more year to go. And no matter what grade you’re in, some of you are probably wishing it were still summer, and you could’ve stayed in bed just a little longer this morning.

Oh. The horror of it all. But it does get worse. So much worse…

I’ve talked a lot about your government’s responsibility for setting high standards, supporting teachers and principals, and turning around schools that aren’t working where students aren’t getting the opportunities they deserve.

But at the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, and the best schools in the world – and none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities. Unless you show up to those schools; pay attention to those teachers; listen to your parents, grandparents and other adults; and put in the hard work it takes to succeed.

And that’s what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education. I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself.

This man is mad, I tell you. Mad, I say. But what you are about to read is the absolute worst…

But at the end of the day, the circumstances of your life – what you look like, where you come from, how much money you have, what you’ve got going on at home – that’s no excuse for neglecting your homework or having a bad attitude. That’s no excuse for talking back to your teacher, or cutting class, or dropping out of school. That’s no excuse for not trying.

Where you are right now doesn’t have to determine where you’ll end up. No one’s written your destiny for you. Here in America, you write your own destiny. You make your own future.

Will this man’s zealous pursuit of a socialist agenda never end? Has he no shame? To read the entire horrendous text, go here if you dare.

Give me your tired, your poor, and your children that I may convert them to Socialism. Yessssss my precious...

Give me your tired, your poor, and your children that I may convert them to Socialism. Yessssss my precious...

Except that none of this has anything to do with Obama’s pursuit of any socialist agenda. This is all about the Fear of a Black President, and the inability of a certain group of whites (obviously not the majority, otherwise how in the hell did he get elected?) who are as committed to their racist beliefs as they claim Obama is to a far-left socialist agenda. They simply cannot stand the thought that a black man has this much power over their lives, that a seriously fine, dark-skinned black woman is now their first lady, and that the two of them are getting it on in the WHITE House. They cannot accept that their country has changed that much on their watch, that so many other red-blooded Ameruhkins with skin the same color as theirs actually voted for this man. And with such enthusiasm! Surely he must be some sort of voodoo high priest or some shit because we all know that white people, when in their right minds, simply DO NOT behave this way.

Now bringing a loaded weapon to an anti-Obama rally? THAT’S proper white behavior, buddy.

God Bless the U.S of A, and pass me that beer.

  1. Maybe I’m naive, but I’m disappointed by your post. I have no illusions that there are plenty of racists in our country, some white and some black (and others, to be sure). But I don’t think those opposed to Obama’s speech to school kids are mostly racist.

Perhaps I don’t have the right frame of reference, and I’m sure my brother is even less aware. But he couldn’t understand what the big deal was. Lurking in the blogosphere, to me it’s simple. The conservatives are threatened by Pres. Obama’s agenda, whatever they think that might be. It’s no different than the McCarthy era anti-Communist hearings.

The problem is, it’s just politics as usual. Wrap in socialism if that works for you. Or wrap it in racism if that better supports your position. Either way, the politics is devisive. Sadly, that seems to be the nature of politics and our two-party system.

  2. Cynical,

I can appreciate what you’re saying, but I think this is a place where you and I share somewhat different views on the issue. While I do agree to an extent that it’s politics as usual and the conservatives are threatened by Obama’s more liberal agenda, I think some of what we’re seeing now is far past simply politics. When you see guns at anti-Obama rallies – rallies where the president isn’t that far away – and when you have a corresponding rise in recruitment from racial hate groups, then that says to me this isn’t all about politics.

Do I think all of the parents are racists? Of course not. But I think enough of them are extremely uncomfortable with the president’s skin coor. And many of them would never have thought of themselves as racists. Probably still don’t. That woman who was caught on camera weeping that she wanted her America back? I’m willing to bet she’s no racist, at least not of the Klan variety. But the America she wants back is an America with no black man at the helm. All that crap poured into the dialogue by Fox News (Obama is a racist, he hates white people, etc) is taking hold.

And that’s part of the plan.

  3. Thanks for your thoughts. Again, I’m afraid I’m truly saddened. I realize we all have our prejudices, but I’d really hoped our country had moved beyond wrapping racism in other terms.

Using socialist as a euphemism for Black for Obama (or Democrats) is just plain wimping out. For someone to not realize they’re ok saying Obama is a socialist based solely on skin color or political party is failing to face their prejudices. I have to hope these are the lunatic fringe. We’ve got to be beyond that. For us metro Detroiters, we’re stuck where we are unless we are beyond that.

As I said, the propagandists made a big deal about Obama’s speech to the school kids. That’s not unusual about any President talking to the kids.

Was it over the top this year? Absolutely. But, I suspect the health care debate, the state of the economy, the Stimulus bill, and current world affairs all pile on top of that. Folks don’t know what to expect.

What’s different today is the Internet gives front and center billing to anyone smart enough to grab it. Anyone who wants can be an “expert”. It doesn’t make them right, but they can easily gather a significant following. That doesn’t change the fact they’re wrong and their followers are sheeple. It also doesn’t stop the hard-core right or staunch Republicans from using scare tactics to advance their cause. But that’s not racist to me. If race is involved, it’s only an ancillary benefit. I hope most people are like me, only thinking of Pres. Obama’s race because someone else mentioned it.

And, yeah. Next to Wal-Mart, I’d consider Fox News part of the Evil Empire.

  4. Another blogger I respect took umbrage with the Tea Partiers. The organizers are trying to whip the masses into a frenzy in an effort to protect their position.

I think the hullabaloo about the President speaking to school kids was just an extension of this. Getting ordinary folk all concerned about indoctrinating the kids serves to further their cause. They just don’t want to admit the majority elected Obama for his message.

Speaking of which, on a positive note: I wouldn’t have paid any attention at all to this speech if weren’t for the media frenzy. I liked everything he had to say.

    • Cynical,

I agree the media whipped this up pretty tough. I think this may have been the first time I even knew the President gave an annual back to school address…
