This Month in Detroit: A Brand New Tiger Stadium!


On April 20, 1912, Tiger Stadium opened and the Tigers were actually victorious! Beating the Cleveland Indians by a score of 6-5, the historic stadium set the pace on that day for a remarkable run featuring some of the most memorable plays in baseball as well as some of the more memorable players.

I confess straight up front that I don’t know much about baseball, but I do respect the sport, and I especially respect the history of the sport in this city. The Tigers and Tiger Stadium are as integral a part of this city as the Detroit River. It runs through us…

  1. I worked from 1986 thru 1994 at the IRS Data Center that was located about 1/2 mile away. I used to see old Tiger Stadium every day. There was a lot of history in that ballpark … probably best remembered for the 1968 World Series. Willie Horton and his crew…

      Yeah, it really is something. Even though not a whole lot of black folks went to games there for various reasons we both know quite a bit about, it still is historic and an integral part of this city. As always, thanks for stopping by.
